The Osbournes at the BRITs – why?

The OsbournesSo The Brits are over for another year and yet more controversy abounds, mainly as a result of the presenters: the Osbourne family.

I know that organisers are concerned with ratings and also keeping alive the slightly rebellious spirit of the awards, but handing over the presenting duties to four people who, at best, would struggle to keep a kids’ party in check smacks of total insanity.

The opprobrium that gets heaped on the likes of Fearne Cotton (who was doing backstage duty last night), Dermot O’Leary, Davina McCall and Cat Deeley masks how tough it is to ‘do’ live TV.

Last night, Sharon and Kelly in particular were just woeful imbuing the proceedings with an air of ‘who gives a fuck’ when they made mistakes.

The fact that Sharon resorted to swearing like a trooper shows how little experience, control and ability she has. Her command of the autocue put me in mind of a five-year-old who just mastered Janet & John, and the way she shoved off Vic Reeves at the end was reminiscent of my gran when she didn’t like what you were listening to on the radio.

Ironically, the member of the family who seemed most at ease and in control was the one who was given least to do, Jack.

Some of the flak should clearly be aimed at the organisers of the event. Rightly commended on bringing it back to primetime TV a couple of years ago, they did well with Chris Evans as the first new presenter.

Last year Russell Brand was OK and at least he has an ability to present and tell jokes properly.

It seems to me that the powers-that-be now need to decide what they want from the event: a comedian, a presenter or someone who is respected in the music industry.

Sadly, the Osbournes fall down on at least two of those categories and, even with Ozzie among them, I’m no longer sure if they are even respected in music circles.

I guess they got it right in one way: everyone’s talking about the event the morning after.

Tony Blackburn’s back – pop-a-doodle-do!

Tony BlackburnThe king of radio DJs Tony Blackburn returned to the breakfast slot last week, as he began his new job at Smooth Radio in London.

Initially standing in for another radio veteran, Graham Dene, Tony was back on the airwaves at 6am last Thursday, before broadcasting in his own new slot on the weekend breakfast show.

It was quite interesting listening to him broadcast, because I can hardly remember from his good old days at Radio 1. Is he really as cheesy as everyone makes out?

Well, clearly on his first day, he was actually very nervous. I heard him effectively say the same sentence three times in a row, when telling everyone that he was sitting in for Graham Dene and then starting his breakfast show on the Saturday.

However, by the weekend, he was well into his stride talking about broadcasting from a rowing boat with a loudhailer off Frinton-on-Sea, and advising a caller on the differences between holidaying in Aruba or Antigua.

The thing about Tony Blackburn is that he clearly loves what he does as a job. Not only that, but he’s pretty darned good at it. You have to be to maintain a successful career for more than 40 years.

Tony, you might not be my preferred choice of DJ, but long may you continue to broadcast.

No-one likes a bad loser

Julie ChristieJulie Christie has gone down in my estimation somewhat after missing out on the Best Actress BAFTA last night.

The award went to Marion Cotillard for her role as Edith Piaf in La Vie En Rose, even though Christie had been tipped to win for her portrayal of an Alzheimer’s sufferer in Away From Her.

When asked about missing out on the gong, Ms Christie pointedly said that the Baftas was “a night for the media to fill gaps”, intimating that they shouldn’t be taken seriously, because she didn’t win.

Clearly it’s a bit of a pisser to miss out on winning something, but you would have thought that someone with as much wisdom and experience as the 66-year-old Christie could take the decision with good grace.

It will be interesting to see her reaction if she misses out again at the Oscars!
